Light carving artist Yurukawa fuu
Yurukawa Fuu is a Japanese light sculpture artist whose practice focuses on carving light into form. Through an original technique known as Hikari-bori (light carving), Yurukawa treats light not as illumination, but as a sculptural material that defines space and perception.
The works are created using industrial Styrofoam, a material commonly used in architecture and construction. Light is transmitted from behind the surface, and by carefully carving and shaving the material by hand, Yurukawa controls its thickness to produce delicate gradations of light and shadow. This process transforms a flat surface into a luminous relief, where light itself appears to be sculpted.
Influenced by nature, memory, and the quiet sensibility of Japanese aesthetics, the sculptures subtly change as viewers move around them, revealing shifting depths and atmospheres. The works invite slow contemplation, balancing stillness with quiet movement.
Yurukawa Fu has exhibited widely in museums, galleries, and public spaces throughout Japan, including the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, the Japan–China Friendship Center Art Museum, and the Woodone Museum of Art. In addition to gallery exhibitions, Yurukawa has produced permanent installations, public art projects, and stage designs for theatrical productions.
With over 15 years of practice and numerous solo exhibitions, Yurukawa Fu offers galleries a distinctive sculptural approach to light that bridges contemporary art and Japanese sensibilities, suitable for both exhibition and collection contexts.
